January 28th, 2020 – Yakima River Fishing Report

Although the water has been rising steadily, the clarity has remained great and fishing has been amazing! Its prime “big fish season” and we’ve been finding big fish consistently, both from the boat and off the bank.

There is a benefit to the water rising like it has been the last few days since it forces the fish to move tighter to the banks, and cause them to really congregate in inside corners and seams making them easy to find, although we’ve been finding the occasional fish in shallow riffles that will eat the stone.

For flies, it’s hard to move away from throwing a stonefly nymph as the top fly. Size 8-10 pats stones in coffee/black, tan/brown, brown, olive/brown and solid black have all been finding fish. We like to fish them with a small tungsten beadhead so we can avoid using any extra weight like split shots or putty.

As for your bottom fly, it’s has really moved in to worm season. Although we’re finding the occasional fish on a midge or small pheasant tail, with the little bit of color in the water a pink or red worm with a white bead has been our best. Gabe’s been keeping busy and tying up lot’s of squirmies and san juan’s, so feel free to keep him tying and stock up on worms.

You are going to want to keep an eye on the graphs (click here) to make sure water level don’t jump too high over the next few days, it’s looking like things are going to get pretty wet starting tonight and through the weekend. Most likely it will blow out, but we might get lucky!
