Yakima River Fishing Report – January 14th, 2022

We’re starting to see a few “warmer” days coming up and we’re definitely itching to get out on the water! We’ve had a few reports of some nice fish being caught, but keep in mind that you still have to work for them. With this big dump of snow we recommend just wade fishing. The boat ramps are covered in too much snow and slush and there isn’t any parking. Below is a picture of where you would normally pull in to the Green Bridge parking lot (taken today, Jan. 14th).

There is still plenty of bank access on the Upper Yakima! Three Bridges, trudging through the snow at bullfrog, or even some pullouts on highway 10 that were plowed. As far as flies, streamer fishing can be pretty productive this time of year. Sam has gotten out a few days and swung up some big fish with trout spey, but with fluctuating water levels a stone and a worm can be hard to beat.

With that, keep in mind that we might have some high water with the higher temperatures we’ll be seeing. The Teanaway has been dumping in a lot of colored water but it’s still remaining fishable down highway 10. Keep and eye on water levels HERE, and remember to check them before coming over the pass.

As usual, feel free to call the shop with any questions or to book a trip! (509)674-2144

Flies

It’s a pretty simple line up this time of year, you really only need a few different flies on you to be successful. If you’re going to fish a streamer, we recommend a sink tip. For nymphs, stick to slower water and inside corners, and don’t be afraid to nymph without split shot. Your flies will have plenty of time to sink in the slow water, and the natural presentation with a long drift can help increase your success.
