Yakima River Fishing Report – February 25th, 2022

It looks like our little cold snap is coming to an end and fishing will star to pick up this weekend. We have not been seeing skwala’s, but if the temperature keeps coming up then hopefully we’ll see them in the next few weeks. Stick to nymphing and streamers for now, but start thinking about tying some skwala dries or picking some up at the shop.

Look for walking speed water, inside corners, drop-offs, and buckets. Try to get a long drift, and keep in mind that you don’t need a lot of extra weight and split shot when fishing soft water like we do this time of year. Fish have been loving stonefly nymphs fished about 3 feet deep, the normal pat’s have enough lead wraps that they don’t need any extra weight.

Boat ramps are also starting to clear out. There’s still some snow in Ensign and Bullfrog but that should also clear up pretty soon. Bristol is now closed to the public, there is now a lock on the gate so keep Bristol out of future floating plans. For an alternative, you can slide a boat in at the mouth of the Teanaway. Feel free to give us a call with any questions!

Flies

Nymphs

Stock up on stonefly nymphs and worms. Don’t sleep on the smaller pat’s in sizes 12 and 14! they can be a great dropper when most of the fish are eating your stone on top. Also, don’t feel like you have to fish light tippet. 2X or 3X leaders with 3X or 4X tippet will have you covered, our fish aren’t very leader shy in the Spring.
