Cash: There is very limited Credit Card use or ATM’s in the town of Punta Allen. Bring at least $1000.00 USD in cash, large and small bills. There is no need to covert USD to Mexican Pesos. You will need cash for tipping the guides, lodge staff and transportation drivers. There are a couple of bars, restaurants, coffee stands and convenient stores in town.

Tips Guides/Lodge Staff: Plan on $450 USD (total) in cash for tips, guides and lodge staff. We tip out on the last night at the lodge. Typically, we tip the guides $100 per day for the boat ($50 per angler), lodge staff is in the $25 per day range. If you have a special day on the water or at the lodge, you can add additional tips at the end of the trip.

Air Travel: You are responsible for booking your own flights. Alaska and Delta Airlines have nonstop flights to Cancun from Seattle. Fly into Cancun on the Friday prior to your first night, Saturday is the first night at the lodge. On your departure day please make your flight arrangements for after 2:00pm. Arriving the day prior to our first night at the lodge makes transporting to the lodge much more enjoyable! Once you make your flight reservation, please email your flight info to ted@troutwaterfly.com

Hotel Cancun: The first night we stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport, nice newer hotel with a good restaurant, pool and bar. You are responsible for booking your room at the hotel. Once you arrive at the Cancun airport, go through baggage claim, customs and immigration, grab a cab or hotel shuttle van to the Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport, it’s about a 10-15 minute trip.

Transportation: Included in the trip price is roundtrip transportation to the lodge from the hotel in Cancun. Transportation will be waiting at the hotel the morning of your first night at the lodge. From Cancun we drive 2 hours south to Tulum. From Tulum we travel another 45 minutes to Ultimo Maya dock to meet the boats. From Ultimo Maya dock it’s about a 1 hour boat ride to the lodge.

Communication at the Lodge: The lodge has wifi, sending and receiving simple text/emails is reliable daily. Most of the time you will be able to make wifi phone calls. You will be able to communicate back home if you chose. But like most things at a remote fishing lodge, it depends on the weather and if the generators are running. We will have normal cell coverage from Cancun to Tulum, once we get on the boats, we are out of normal cell coverage for the week.

Overview of Trip:

Fly to Cancun on Friday, stay Friday night at the Courtyard by Marriott Cancun Airport, Saturday morning transportation picks us up and we start the journey to the Lodge. Saturday, we get to the lodge around 2:00pm. Settle into our rooms, have lunch, set up fishing gear and head out for 2-3 hours of flats wade fishing. Saturday night cocktails and appetizers when we get back, dinner and a group meeting about the week. Sunday our guided fishing program begins. Friday is the last day of guided fly fishing. Saturday, we head back to Cancun Airport to fly home.

Typical day at the lodge: Breakfast each morning is at 7:00am, coffee is served by 6:00am. Lunch every day is on the water. Each day we are back at the lodge between 4-5pm for cocktails and appetizers. Dinner is served at 7:00pm. Food at the lodge is very good and healthy. If anyone has any food allergies or restrictions, please let us know before we leave. The accommodations at the lodge are simple, clean and very comfortable. This is truly a fishing lodge with everything you need and nothing you don’t need.

Gear for Ascension Bay: You are responsible for bringing all your own fishing gear, flies, leaders and tippet. We have an online shop setup to purchase everything you need for the trip. We highly recommend purchasing our custom tied Ascension Bay flies. They are custom tied for Ascension Bay. You can buy flies individually or purchase a fly box we have setup for the trip. Saltwater gear is highly recommended (Rods/Reels) and warm saltwater lines, freshwater gear will fail, and freshwater lines (warm or cold) are miserable to cast. Fishing and Guides:

Ascension Bay is one of the premier saltwater destinations in the world. If you are looking for Permit, this is the place. Typically, every day you will have shots at all the big 4 saltwater species Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, Snook. If you are looking to add a Grand Slam or Super Slam, Ascension Bay won’t disappoint the experienced angler. If you are new to saltwater fishing Ascension Bay has excellent bonefish flats to help develop your saltwater skills. The guides at the lodge are very experienced and there is a Senior and Junior guide in each boat. The lodge uses very comfortable 24ft flats style boats. The guides speak English and are very willing to provide you the experience you are looking for every day. We highly recommend practicing your casting before the trip, including a double haul. The goal is to be deadly accurate at 40-50 feet. Accuracy is more important than distance. Also, focus on your fitness prior to your week on the flats! Saltwater Flats fly fishing can be very demanding!

Species of Fish: Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, Snook are the primary targets. Jacks, Cuda, Trigger fish, Sharks, Cobia are available targets as well.
